Minimal Tacrolimus Systemic Exposure
- Minimal systemic exposure following topical application7:
- Most patients did not have detectable levels after topical administration 2,7,12
- When detected, levels were transient
- Systemic tacrolimus exposure in adult eczema patients treated with Protopic Ointment was approximately 30-fold less than that seen with oral immunosuppressive doses in transplant patients7
- No systemic accumulation7
- Pediatric eczema patients had a lower frequency and lower average of detectable blood levels compared to adults4
- Systemic exposure generally declined as skin returned to normal
- Protopic should not be used with occlusive dressings
- The use of Protopic on patients with Netherton’s syndrome or similar skin
diseases is not recommended
