Minimal Tacrolimus Systemic Exposure

  • Minimal systemic exposure following topical application7:
    • Most patients did not have detectable levels after topical administration 2,7,12
    • When detected, levels were transient
    • Systemic tacrolimus exposure in adult eczema patients treated with Protopic Ointment was approximately 30-fold less than that seen with oral immunosuppressive doses in transplant patients7
  • No systemic accumulation7
  • Pediatric eczema patients had a lower frequency and lower average of detectable blood levels compared to adults4
  • Systemic exposure generally declined as skin returned to normal
  • Protopic should not be used with occlusive dressings
  • The use of Protopic on patients with Netherton’s syndrome or similar skin diseases is not recommended
